The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the official notification for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026, opening a major Central Government recruitment opportunity for engineering diploma and degree holders.

Online applications started on 2 September 2026 and will remain open until 22 September 2026 at 11:00 PM.

SSC has announced:

1,748 tentative vacancies

through this examination.

The recruitment covers Junior Engineer posts in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electrical & Mechanical and Telecom disciplines across several Central Government departments. The examination will also recruit Scientific Assistants for the India Meteorological Department (IMD). All the notified posts are Group B posts in Pay Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 under the 7th Central Pay Commission.

The application and examination dates above come directly from SSC's 2 September notification.

SSC JE Vacancy 2026

SSC has officially announced:

1,748 Tentative Vacancies

However, candidates should note that the Commission has not yet released the complete final department-wise, post-wise and category-wise vacancy distribution.

SSC also clarifies that it does not collect vacancies on a State-wise or Zone-wise basis for this examination.

Important Clarification

It would therefore be inaccurate at this stage to publish an unofficial table claiming an exact number of:

Civil vacancies
Electrical vacancies
Mechanical vacancies
Telecom vacancies
IMD Scientific Assistant vacancies
SC/ST/OBC/EWS-wise vacancies

as final figures.

The only confirmed official overall number at present is:

1,748 tentative vacancies.

Is SSC JE 2026 Only for Junior Engineer Posts?

Not completely.

Although the examination is called the Junior Engineer Examination 2026, SSC has also included:

Scientific Assistant — India Meteorological Department

in the recruitment.

SSC's notification states that the examination will recruit various Junior Engineers for Government of India organisations/offices and will also be used for recruitment of Scientific Assistants in IMD.

So the safest headline is:

“SSC JE 2026: 1,748 JE & Scientific Assistant Vacancies”

rather than claiming all 1,748 are exclusively traditional JE posts.

Which Posts Are Included in SSC JE 2026?

SSC has also provided cross-eligibility rules for certain candidates. For example, eligible Mechanical candidates may also be considered for Electrical & Mechanical posts, while Telecom/Electrical/Scientific Assistant candidates may be eligible for certain other posts if they satisfy the exact educational qualification.

Can Diploma Holders Apply for SSC JE 2026?

Yes.

Diploma holders are eligible for several SSC JE posts.

But this does not mean every diploma holder is eligible for every department.

SSC JE Age Limit 2026

The crucial date for calculating age is:

There are primarily two upper-age limits depending on the post:

Posts with maximum age 30 years

Candidate should have been born between:

2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008

Posts with maximum age 32 years

Candidate should have been born between:

2 August 1994 and 1 August 2008

Which SSC JE Posts Have 32-Year Age Limit?

Some posts, including those in:

CPWD

and:

Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships

have an upper age limit of 32 years.

Many other participating posts carry an upper age limit of 30 years.

Candidates should check the exact post rather than using one universal age limit.

SSC JE Age Relaxation 2026

Major category-wise upper-age relaxations include:

Ex-Servicemen and other eligible categories receive relaxation according to the Central Government rules specified in the notification.

Important BRO Rule: Only Male Candidates

SSC specifically states:

Only male candidates are eligible for Junior Engineer posts in Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

BRO posts also carry separate stringent physical and medical requirements.

Candidates should therefore not place BRO high in their eventual preferences unless they meet all of its physical, medical and eligibility requirements.

SSC JE Salary 2026

The notified posts are:

In addition to basic pay, selected candidates can receive applicable Central Government allowances depending on their department and place of posting.

Therefore, ₹35,400 should be understood as the starting basic pay of Level 6, not the final in-hand salary.

SSC JE Application Fee 2026

The application fee is:

However, SSC provides complete fee exemption to:

SC candidates
ST candidates
PwBD candidates
Eligible Ex-Servicemen

Fee can be paid through approved online methods including BHIM UPI, Net Banking and supported debit cards.

SSC JE 2026 Important Dates

These are the latest dates in the official notification, superseding the much earlier tentative examination calendar where applicable.

SSC JE Application Correction Charges

SSC will allow candidates to correct and resubmit the application during:

28–30 September 2026

The correction charge is:

These correction charges apply to all candidates regardless of gender or category, including candidates who were exempt from the original ₹100 application fee.

How to Apply for SSC JE 2026

Candidates must first have a valid SSC One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new SSC system. The application can then be submitted through ssc.gov.in or the mySSC mobile application.

The application process is broadly: complete OTR if needed, log in, select Junior Engineer Examination 2026, enter educational/category/post details, capture the required photograph, upload the signature and relevant disability certificate if applicable, review the entire form, pay the fee where required and complete final submission.

SSC strongly advises candidates to save a copy of their final submitted application.

Real-Time Photograph Is Required

Candidates do not normally upload an old passport photograph as the main application photograph.

SSC's application module captures a:

Real-time photograph

through the camera while the candidate is filling the application.

Candidates should:

Face the camera directly
Keep the face fully visible
Avoid cap
Avoid mask
Avoid spectacles during capture
Never photograph an already printed/photo-screen image

SSC warns that applications containing a photograph of a pre-existing photograph can be rejected, subject to its Aadhaar-authentication provisions.

The scanned signature must be in JPEG format and generally between:

10 KB and 20 KB

with the dimensions specified in the notice.

Do Not Submit Multiple Applications

SSC has issued an important warning.

Only one online application form should be submitted during the normal application period.

If SSC detects multiple applications from the same candidate using different registration numbers:

All such applications can be rejected.

If a candidate submits multiple forms and then appears more than once at any stage, the candidate can also face debarment according to SSC rules.

Use the correction window instead of submitting multiple fresh forms.

SSC JE Selection Process 2026

SSC JE Paper-I Exam Pattern 2026

Paper-I is a Computer Based Examination.

SSC JE Paper-I Negative Marking

For each incorrect answer in Paper-I:

0.25 marks will be deducted.

Because Paper-I is used to shortlist candidates for Paper-II, accuracy remains important even though its marks do not enter the final merit calculation.

SSC JE Paper-II Exam Pattern 2026

Paper-II is also:

Computer Based

and consists of:

100 questions

for:

300 marks

Duration:

2 Hours

Candidates answer the relevant technical subject corresponding to their selected stream/post.

Paper-II Has Much Higher Negative Marking

This is extremely important.

For every incorrect answer in Paper-II:

1 mark is deducted.

That is much higher than Paper-I's 0.25-mark penalty.

Candidates should therefore avoid treating Paper-II like a high-risk guessing exam.

Scientific Calculator Will Be Available On Screen

SSC has introduced an important facility:

A scientific calculator will be available on the computer screen during the examination.

SSC also says relevant IS 456:2000 and Steam Table material, where required, can be made available on the candidate's computer console.

Physical calculators and physical copies of these tables will not be allowed inside the examination lab.

Minimum Qualifying Marks

SSC has prescribed minimum qualifying marks in both Paper-I and Paper-II as:

These are only minimum qualifying marks.

The actual competitive cut-off for progressing/final selection can be considerably higher depending on vacancies, difficulty, normalization and candidate performance.

Does Paper-I Count in Final Merit?

No.

This is one of the most important points of SSC JE 2026.

SSC explicitly states:

Paper-I is qualifying in nature.

Normalized Paper-I marks are used for shortlisting candidates to Paper-II.

But:

Only normalized Paper-II scores will determine final merit.

So candidates should think of the examination in two stages:

Paper-I = qualify and reach Paper-II

Paper-II = score for final merit

SSC JE Final Selection 2026

Final selection/allocation will depend primarily on:

SSC will draw separate selection lists for the relevant post groups, including JE Civil, JE Electrical & Mechanical, JE Telecom and Scientific Assistant in IMD.

Post Preference Will Be Extremely Important

Before the First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA), SSC will ask eligible candidates to submit their:

Post and Department Preferences

The preference is:

Final and irreversible.

SSC warns that a candidate who does not choose a particular post cannot later demand selection to it even if their merit would otherwise have been sufficient.

More seriously, a candidate who fails to submit post preferences within the specified window will not be considered for any post in the FRTA/final result.

SSC's FRTA and Sliding Mechanism

SSC says it does not maintain a conventional waiting/reserve list for its multi-factor examinations.

Instead, the Commission has introduced a:

Sliding mechanism

to improve the filling of notified vacancies.

The 2026 JE notification says FRTA/final allocation will be based on Paper-II performance and candidate preferences, subject to the Commission's sliding-framework notices.

Candidates should follow the specific FRTA instructions issued after the examination rather than assuming that older SSC selection processes will apply unchanged.

Document Verification After Final Result

SSC itself will recommend/select candidates, but:
